It’s hardly surprising to see his classroom full of students because let’s face it, it’s part of the school schedule at Marion Jr-Sr High School.
But when Mr. Michael Herlan’s classroom is full of students during their free periods, it says something about what Marion students think of Mr. Herlan. That’s why it was fitting to learn that Mr. Herlan was selected by New York Senator Pam Helming for the “Educators Inspiring a Generation” award. Senator Helming was at Marion Jr-Sr High on June 15 to surprise, and present, Mr. Herlan with the award.
Mr. Herlan has been a teacher at Marion for 31 years, first as a French instructor and currently as a middle school social studies teacher. He’s also been a class advisor, created the AV Club that allows students to work with new technology, works as the district’s Audio/Visual Coordinator and is President of the Marion Teachers’ Association.
But it’s his work in the classroom, connecting with students to engage the learning process while establishing a welcome and safe learning environment that makes Mr. Herlan the ideal recipient of Senator Helming’s recognition.
“Our district is stronger because of the professionalism and leadership Mr. Herlan demonstrates on a daily basis both as a teacher himself and as a representative of his colleagues,” said Marion Jr-Sr High Principal Shane Dehn.
Congratulations to Mr. Herlan for this well-deserved honor and thank you for all you do at Marion!
