Thursday and Friday last week was a big day for some Marion eighth-graders as the work they put into their Civic Readiness Capstone Projects were put on display.
ELA teacher Mrs. FitzSimmons and social studies teacher Mr. Herlan welcomed students over the two days in the library, where they offered the results of their research into a variety of civic topics. It’s the second year of the program for Marion.
“It’s high-level thinking for these kids,” said Mr. Herlan.
The project provides one point toward the six points students need to receive the Seal of Civic Readiness on their diploma. Presentations centered on personal experience, civic engagement and provided experience in skills for research and presentation. It also provided opportunities for an action piece, encouraging students to become active in their community.
“We didn’t want them to just sit at the table,” said Mrs. FitzSimmons. “We want them to serve.”
